A Chronicle of food and hunger

The Department of International Relations and the Institute of Latin American Studies in collaboration with the Cervantes Institute in Bucharest, organized, Wednesday, April 2, 2014, the Conference `A Chronicle of food and hunger’, supported by ES Mr. Mario Arvelo, Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to FAO, President of the Committee for Agriculture of the United Nations.

As they gained consciousness and evolved technical skills, the earliest humans sought nutrients by putting knowledge before instinct, while ascending to the pinnacle of the food chain. Humanity began eating in increasing quantity and quality, accelerating its progress towards who we are today.

In slowly realizing how nature works, men and women began to challenge their dependence upon the climate, other animals, and luck. They took up this journey with help from unexplained phenomena: a disk of fire traversing the heavens, the soil nurturing the plants, water falling from the skies… Then, the invention of agriculture opened a gateway to promises of abundance and comfort.

But not all of us enjoy the benefits of this productive revolution: one in six people lack the means to produce or to buy food. Most of the hungry are women and children, and almost all live and die in Africa, in Asia, and in Latin America.

7th EU-Brazil Summit. A strategic partnership.

The 7^th EU-Brazil Summit was held on 24^th February, in Brussels. This annual Summit was organised within the framework of the strategic partnership established between the European Union and Brazil in 2007. Among the main issues of bilateral cooperation comprising three key areas of mutual interest, economic development, foreign policy and global challenges, it was highlighted the importance of the bi-regional Strategic Partnership.

The significant importance of the Institute of Latin-American Studies was confirmed at the academic workshop entitled “European integration and the EU-Latin America & the Caribbean relations” from Chile

 On the 15^th of January 2014 the University of Chile hosted the academic analysis workshop entitled “European integration and the EU-Latin America and the Caribbean relations”, that examined the development of the European integration processes and focused on the relation maintained between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean.

At the event participated professor dr. Iordan Gheorghe Bărbulescu, director of the Institute of Latin American Studies (ISLA) from Bucharest (Romania), Ambassador Pablo Cabrera, director of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Mr. Thomas Lagathu, representing the Embassy of France in Chile and Ms. Camila Ladies Jipa, the Romanian Consul in Chile. Among the guests that took part at the workshop we will also mention the Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration and director of the Europe-Latin America relations Center (CELARE) – Mr. Marco Moreno, Mr. Héctor Casanueva and the director of the Asia-Pacific department of UCEN – Ms. Carolina Cabrera.

Two of the most important topics of the agenda revolved around strengthening the academic cooperation between the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration from Bucharest and the University of Chile – so that it would develop and promote the exchange of values and experiences of the two regions – and emphasized the preparation of a discussion agenda for the second academic summit EU-ALC, that will be organized by the Institute of Latin-American Studies (ISLA) and held in Bucharest between 26^th-27^th May 2014.
